Every September, men and women looking for love come to Lisdoonvarna, Ireland’s only spa town. At the matchmaking festival they hope to find “a good match. The tradition began when farmers came here after the hay harvest had been gathered, bringing their daughters with them. Even today, in remote parts of rural Ireland, it can be difficult to meet your soul mate. Willie Daly wants to help bring people together. A pint glass of Guinness in front of him, Daly hands out forms to fill in and consults his big matchmaking book with contacts and vital statistics. Festivals have long been part of Irish life: the Puck Fair in Killorgin, for example, has been going on for hundreds of years, while others such as the Fleadh Ceol and the Matchmaking Festival in Lisdoonvarna have been taking place for decades. But in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of music festivals in Ireland. About a decade ago, you could have counted the number of really good Irish music festivals with one hand.
Today, there are numerous music festivals all over the country. And it’s not just the tastes of indie and rock fans that have been catered for – although these are indeed spoiled for choice – all kinds of genres now have festivals in Ireland. This festival, which began in , years, bills itself as the “boutique music festival. More particularly, it’s for music fans that are getting that little bit older, but who aren’t prepared to eat nothing but half-cooked burgers for three days.
This festival may attract an older crowd than its main rival, Oxegen see below , but it’s certainly every bit of fun: there have been some terrific acts that have played here over the years, such as Wilco and Arcade Fire. The location, Stradbally in County Laois – less than a two hour drive from Dublin – is an almost ideal festival venue, replete with lush green, natural amphitheatre-type fields.
This festival is also noteworthy for the pretty good camping arrangements as festivals go and the wide variety of food and drinks available, ideal for the more discerning festival-goer – think vegetarian wraps and mojitos, not soggy French fries and warm beer. Electric Picnic is also commendable for being one of the best organized – and certainly more eco-friendly – festivals in the country. Although this festival typically attracts a younger crowd than Electric Picnic, it always seems to boast a very strong line up.

The food was enjoyable and the staff very friendly – however when coming to pack to leave the hotel we realised an amount of jewellery and personal belongings had been taken from our room. The Police were involved, but not much help really – the incident was reported at 4pm and the police arrived at 9. So please beware when leaving anything in the hotel room. Our belongings were hidden away in two bags in a drawer.
Apart from this was an enjoyable holiday and i would definately visit the area again. My wife and i have just returned from a trip to Ireland, and our second hotel was the Hydro hotel in lisdoonvarna, where we stayed for three nights. As our coach pulled up we were hoping for a better stay than our previous hotel, the Ardmore in Dublin, see review. A smiling receptionist, welcomed us to the Hydro, handed us our keys, and pointed us in the right direction for our room, which as it was on the ground floor, was very easy to find, our cases soon followed.
The room was reaaly nice ,clean and fresh and spotless. The hotel itself is brill with old photographs as well as some unusual artwork, but it all seems to work well together.

My only experience of visiting the matchmakers festival was as a child on a day trip with my parents some years back! Then it seemed to be lots of drinking in scruffy hotel bars, dancing to country and western music and not much else really.
